high school biology

It can be challenging to self-study Biology at the High School level with only a textbook as your guide. How do you plan out your year? How do you decide what labs to do and when? What do you do if your text doesn’t adequately explain a tricky but important concept? And how do you visualize dynamic processes, such as photosynthesis or mitosis?

This BHR module aims to guide students through a successful self-study of High School Biology. The two key elements of the module are a week-by-week syllabus, which links textbook study with optional labs, and a library of information-packed BHR topic pagesEach topic page features a curated selection of our favorite free, online resources–videos, animations, virtual labs, and simulations–along with study tips and a list of key vocabulary terms.

Here’s how to self-study Biology with BHR:

before the school year begins

1. Download the 32-week syllabus.

2. Purchase a textbook. We like Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections.*

3. Buy Illustrated Guide to Home Biology Experiments if you plan to do labs.

each week throughout the year

1. Read the assigned chapter, then complete the end-of-chapter questions.

2. Complete the recommended lab (if relevant).

3. Visit the BHR Topic Page to deepen your understanding of the material.
